The journal records an 1849 voyage to California around the Horn. It describes the Cayuga Joint Stock Company, events on the bark Belvedere, Mason's stay at the Mariposa Diggings, and his trip with Herring and Moss to the Trinity River Mines. Mason sailed home by the Isthmus on the ships Crescent City and Antelope. There are accounts of gold dug, material on the Mason and Hill families, letters between Mason and his wife Eliza Hill and his daughter, and letters by Shew and Wellington to Eliza.
